Work Skills You Need! Patience and A Good Attitude
Ever wonder why some people seem to get ahead and be given opportunities before others? Why do some people always have the help of others without asking for it? It is simple, these individuals posses patience and a good attitude. Funny enough, neither patience nor a good attitude require any skill!
Patience
Sometimes things don’t work out. Occasionally things take a little longer. Every once in a while a co-worker needs to vent. Sometimes you just need to stay calm and find another way. I want you to take a moment and think about the major conflicts in your work place, some may be recent, and others maybe so problematic that they have left a lasting memory. Now I want you to pick one and think about it and ask yourself, could it have been avoided if someone had been a little more patient? The answer is probably a resounding yes! Delays happen, setbacks happen, and people may let you down but don’t let that cause you to lose your patience.
And here is a secret – your boss is human – despite the accepted workplace opinion of your boss being a fun sucking hot head!! Your boss has the same insecurities that you do. Sometimes they make mistakes and cause you to do things twice, or worse, change the plan up so the project you just spent a week on is no longer needed!! Have patience, your boss and your career will thank you. Even if they don’t say anything.
Patience is good for your wallet too!
I recently read a book called Warren Buffett Invests Like a Girl: And Why You Should, Too by Louann Lofton. In this book Louann highlights the financial benefits of having patience in the investing world. Not only the financial returns, but the amount of stress and headaches that are avoided by not reacting to every little news blip about the stock and CEO. Sometimes it is best to be patient and sit on the sidelines until the dust settles. This book is a must read!
Whether you are a boss or a entry level worker, all of your co-workers will respect you and look up to you if you exert patience even in the toughest of situations.
A Good Attitude
I can not STRESS this enough, having a good attitude is the single most important work place skill that you can have. Listen, we all have to be at work 40 hours a week, we have bills and responsibilities, why in the world would we want to spend 40 hours a week being miserable. A good attitude is contagious, bring in a good attitude, keep a good attitude, and watch it spread. Having a good attitude is more than just being happy, it opens the door to so many possibilities. Co-workers want to be around you and work on projects with you – you benefit from being a leader. Managers want to bring you in on special projects because you have a positive attitude on new ideas. And even if you disagree with the idea, you do so in a positive way. You move up the ladder quicker than someone who is a grouch. Customers gravitate towards a positive light and not a grouch. This helps you make more sales and earn more money.
The most important thing is that attitude makes or breaks you. ANYONE can be taught do the the actual job in an effective manner. But it is HOW you do the job that is the most important thing. Do people want to work with you or do they quickly leave the room when you enter?
Smile and Forgive
Commit to being in a good mood, complement people in a professional way, and don’t let a stinky assignment ruin your day. If you are able to demonstrate patience and a good attitude for a couple of months, you will see doors open and new opportunities be presented to you. The best part about it is that it requires no money or special skills! Now go out there and give it a try!
